A Warm Welcome - Not tons of questions
The first session is really about getting a feel for one another and settling in. I wouldn't expect you to want to share everything straight away (unless you want to of course). My aim is to create a safe space where you feel deeply respected and listened to. I will need to run through a few practical things such as the agreement, confidentiality, session duration and payment/cancellation policies with you and ask if you have any questions before we go into the session.
Over To You - A chance for you to share what brings you here
I will offer the time for you to explore what's brought you here and what you hope to get from our sessions. You do not have to have it all figured out or explain perfectly, you can share as much or as little as you like. I will follow your unique pace. Some people come with very specific issues and others don't know where to start but they know they are unhappy and want to improve their life, both are valid starting points.
It's Okay to be Nervous
I've been through therapy myself and I sometimes go back to it. Believe me when I say, I've been a client too (and I sometimes still am one!) Most people feel a little nervous before their sessions and especially the first one, it's completely normal. My aim is to support you, just as you are - not to judge or analyse you. You do not need to perform or get it all right.
You might leave the first session feeling a mixture of emotions, many reactions are common. It's a process and not a quick-fix, sometimes things might feel uncomfortable but it's making strides in the direction of positive, lasting change.
Final Thoughts
Therapy is a space that is uniquely yours, somewhere you can talk, reflect, process or simply be. If you're considering booking your first session and have any questions, do get in touch!
